Hand turned in natural wood and colored with vegetable dyes these toys are distinctive and unique to Channapatna and Kondapalli. Though safe to play by children of all ages, it is recommended for usage / play only under adult supervision, as any form of ingestion of the wood or natural colors could be harmful.
Kondapalli and Channapatna both in the south of India continue to create toys out of soft wood and vegetable dyes. While Kondapallis origin has its roots down 400 odd years, Channapatna evolved around 200 years ago under the influence of the then King Tipu Sultan who invited artisans from Persia to train local artisans in this art form.
Surrendered to extinction, both saw their revival only in the last few decades, where a small marginalized community recreated this hand craft in stunning colors and amazing forms, that charm the few who have been exposed to it.
